EBCU Unveils Updated Manifesto: Four Pillars for Europe’s Beer Consumers

"EBCU has updated its manifesto, expanding from three to four core principles with a new focus on Health and Wellbeing alongside Diversity, Information, and Cost."

The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) has updated its manifesto, expanding from three to four core principles. The refreshed document adds a new focus on Health and Wellbeing alongside the existing pillars of Diversity, Information, and Cost.

The Four Pillars

The updated manifesto addresses four key areas for every beer consumer in Europe:

1. Diversity of Beer – Consumers’ right to choose from a wide variety of brewers and beer styles, including ensuring market access for small independent brewers and availability of low/non-alcoholic alternatives.

2. Information About Beer – Clear information about beer ingredients, alcohol content, dietary values, and brewing origins, with easy access to information about low/non-alcoholic alternatives.

3. Cost of Beer – Justifiable pricing that reflects real production costs in a competitive market, fair taxation across Europe, and support for sustainability measures.

4. Health and Wellbeing Issues Around Beer (NEW) – The most significant addition recognizes beer’s role in fostering social bonds and cultural identity when consumed responsibly in social contexts.

Balancing Health and Social Wellbeing

The new Health and Wellbeing section acknowledges that while health considerations are essential, it’s equally important to recognize beer’s positive social and cultural aspects. As the manifesto states: “Beer, consumed responsibly in social groups and contexts, plays a key role in fostering social bonds and cultural identity of Europe.”

This balanced approach reflects EBCU’s commitment to promoting responsible consumption while celebrating beer’s traditional role in European culture and community life.

The complete updated manifesto is now available on the EBCU website.

The European Beer Consumers Union represents beer consumers and their national representative organizations throughout Europe, promoting high-quality beer through dialogue with brewers, governments, and industry organizations.
