Japanese multinational Kirin acquires Yorkshire micro via Australian subsidiary

Independent British breweries continue to attract attention from acquisitive foreign brewers, and Magic Rock of Huddersfield is the latest target. Kirin’s subsidiary Lion announced today that they have acquired 100% of the brewery for an undisclosed sum. Less than a year ago, Kirin purchased London brewery FourPure. Reports indicate that the moves to add Magic Rock to its portfolio began immediately after this deal was announced.

Magic Rock has been a stalwart of the UK craft beer scene since 2011 and is known for its striking circus-themed branding and iconic beers, like Cannonball IPA and Bearded Lady imperial stout. In a statement typical of such takeover announcements, Magic Rock founder Richard Burhouse said the brewery will continue as usual with the new investment and will be able to expand capacity while seeking new export opportunities. It employs 45 staff and brewed 16,000hL of beer last year.

Lion has significant experience with craft brands, having previously acquired Little Creatures in Australia and Emerson’s in New Zealand, among other breweries.
