European Beer Consumers Union unveils its new guide to the beer styles of Europe and beyond – the world’s first on-line consumer guide to the diversity of beer today

Brussels, Belgium – June 5, 2023 – The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU), the leading body championing beer advocacy and consumer interests in Europe, today proudly announced the launch of its new guide “The Beer Styles of Europe and Beyond”. This innovative website is set to become an essential resource, providing extensive knowledge about the expansive range of beer styles available across Europe and the world.

The guide categorizes the myriad of beer styles into six major groups based on ingredients, brewing processes, and serving styles among other factors. It is designed to help even the inexperienced beer drinker identify common themes among beers of the same style or sub-style and to appreciate the craft and diversity of brewing.

Spearheaded by Tim Webb, co-author of The World Atlas of Beer, it aims to serve as a living document, reflecting the ever-evolving world of beer. The guide takes a European perspective but aims to be compatible with the 2021 Guidelines from the Beer Judge Certification Program used by beer judges, and the Beer Styles 2023 Guidelines from the Brewers Association in the United States, aimed at craft brewers.

The website offers invaluable insights into the diversity of beer in today’s world, outlining brewing methods, historical backgrounds, and even serving styles that differentiate one beer style from another. It is an online compendium where the styles listed are those that have stood the test of time or seem well set to do so.

EBCU acknowledges the constant evolution of beer styles and is committed to updating the guide to reflect these changes. As a testament to this commitment, it invites users to provide suggestions for improving the guide.

The EBCU is confident that this new resource will inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art and science of brewing, and contribute significantly to the global beer culture.  Beer is never as simple as you think.
